chicken goalThe NBA Finals begin in two days when they’ll be competing directly with game four of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Which means tonight Gary Bettman is doing everything in his power to ensure that the Penguins win.  Otherwise, game four’s ratings will be less than the Magic Hour.

The interesting games in the MLB include:

michelle_nunesPoints of Interest is the daily link dump for your morning or afternoon commute in and out of Souvenir City.  We’ll be throwing together some other stops from out there in blogdome and the interwebs to peak your interest.  Some of them will actually be what some might consider educational.  Most of them, are going to everything but that.

Greetings and salutations.  Long day.  We’re still learning the ins-and-outs of the site and we’ve learned how to auto-post today.  However, there’s a few buttons we neglected to push so sorry about the delay on Touch ‘Em All and the AM Commute.  We’re getting better every day…unlike David Ortiz.

Oh, and that’s Michelle Nunes.  She’s the girl from the Blackberry Touch commercial…and she worked at Hooters in college.  Tip us off at SouvenirCityBlog@gmail.com.

Barry seems to be pretty cool with Iran having nuclear energy as long as they play nice with it…They’re finding bits and pieces of that plane from France over Brazil now…The Supreme Court Justice nominee that we heard saved baseball back in 1995 started her confirmation process today…We watched five minutes of this new reality show on NBC, we give it two more weeks to survive..

The NFL has an important collective bargaining agreement that is set to expire in 2010 and the players and owners are starting to get the ball rolling to ensure that America’s #1 sport doesn’t get locked out like hockey did.  There’s a laundry list of issues for both sides to sort through and each side will have to make concessions in order to get a deal done.  At least, that’s what we learned in our negotiation 101 class back in the day.

Early this morning at the NFLPA offices there was a slight diversion. (more…)

Well, Ana Ivanovic was out yesterday.  Maria Sharapova has been eliminated today.  Is there any other reason that we should be covering this event besides those two?

We didn’t think so either.  Moving on…

Better photos of the two ladies after the jump. (more…)

It’s a do-or-die game for the Penguins tonight.  Down 0-2 in a best of seven is not an enviable place to be in when it comes to the Stanley Cup Finals.  Only three teams have ever come back from that deficit to win the Cup.  And that’s in over 40 tries.  Sidney Crosby was only on the ice for only 19 minutes.  That will need to change in game 2 in order for the Pens to turn things around.  The Kid had 14 points coming into the Finals and has yet to register a point in the series.

We picked the Penguins to win the series and we’re going to stand by it.  We’re also confident that we won’t be the only ones rooting for them tonight.  The NHL could use a youth movement.  Another Detroit title just to further a dynasty is not going to bring new fans into a sport that desperately needs them.

Phil Mickelson will make his return to the PGA Tour in a few weeks for a warm-up round at the St. Jude Classic.  After his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer, Mickelson said he would take an indefinite leave of absence to be with his family.  We hear this all the time, but, this appears to be another situation where the course will be the player’s sanctuary and provide some reprieve from his current circumstances.

We’ve always been Tiger fans, but we’ll be paying a lot more attention to how the rotund-one shoots in the two tournaments he’s now committed to playing.  While it’s obviously not something that Phil had planned to use for a popularity boost, this is definitely something that will put a few more fans in Lefty’s corner.

Athletics White Sox BaseballWhite Sox 6 – Athletics 2: Jim Thome hit a 3-run, put-away homer for the Sox in the eighth inning as they bested Oakland 6-2.  Gavin Floyd went 7 strong for Ozzie’s bunch striking out eight along the way.  This has to beg the question of where a player such as Jim Thome ranks among all-time HR hitters.  Much like former south-sider Frank Thomas, Thome is one of the few players left from the 1990s that isn’t yet linked to steroids.

Pirates 8 – Mets 5: J.J. Putz didn’t even record an out in the eighth as the Pirates scored five runs to beat the Mets.  Not a single run in the game came via the long-ball.  Carlos Beltran was another late scratch for the wounded Metropolitans.

Astros 4 – Rockies 1: Just another guy that doesn’t want to pitch for the White Sox threw a gem after speaking out.  Roy Oswalt went 7 IP and picked up 8 Ks in the outing.  The petting zoo in Houston brought in all the runs as El Caballo and Big Puma drove in two steaks each.
