rickyrubioThis whole Ricky Rubio situation is a nightmare.  We were going to blast the kid at first for trying to pull an Eli Manning or John Elway but we read up on the situation and it’s as complicated as ever.  His buyout with his team in Spain is a mindfuck.  The team asked for an extension on its tax payment but it had to put up collateral in order to do so.

The collateral was Rubio’s contract.

Gregg PopovichThe later portions of the draft saw even more trades of picks and it seemed like every time Stern came to the podium he was announcing one.  There’s a few guys that fell deep into the draft and some of them got lucky with the teams they landed with.  Minnesota is still in disarray.  That’s not changing anytime soon.

BOOMS

San Antonio Spurs – DeJuan Blair is the really lucky one here.  Yeah, the Spurs drafted him.  But he is going to benefit greatly from working with a coach like Gregg Popovich.  The Richard Jefferson trade looks that much bigger with Blair sliding all the way into the second round for the Spurs.  This guy isn’t going to be a great scorer but he is going to be aggressive.  One thing we always see transfer from college into the pros is rebounding ability.  Some guys just know how to get the ball.  Blair is one of those guys.

lebron jayzThe draft this year wasn’t that deep as we discussed yesterday.  We’ll breakdown who we think made the best of their lottery picks and who is probably going to get fired in two years.  There were a lot of trades throughout this draft so that spiced up the action a little bit.  Let’s start with the winners.

BOOMS

New Jersey Nets – After a day full of the trades, the Nets are left with a backcourt of Devin Harris, Rafer Alston, Courtney Lee and their draft choice Terrence Williams.  That is a very young, very cheap and improving backcourt.  Kind of like the place you might need a small forward that can get to the basket, slash and create open looks for all those shooters.  Last years pick of Brook Lopez meshes well with that kind of acquisition as well.  Chris Douglas-Roberts better hurry up and impress or he’ll be out of there.

Michael Jackson Thriller Album Cover 25th Anniversary

Points of Interest is the daily link dump for your morning or afternoon commute in and out of Souvenir City.  We’ll be throwing together some other stops from out there in blogdome and the interwebs to peak your interest.  Some of them will actually be what some might consider educational.  Most of them, are going to everything but that.

The NBA Draft got overshadowed last night with the death of Michael Jackson being announced shortly after 6 p.m. on the east coast.  Still, the draft went on.  Lots of trades made last night.  Stuart continues to prove that he doesn’t belong behind a desk anymore.  And Ricky Rubio had a temper tantrum.  We’ll give our grades on the draft later today.  We leave you with Michael Jackson links, pictures and videos for the remainder of POI today.  Sports in the blog links.

TMZ has link after link after link after link of the coverage.  It’s almost a little bit too much……..The dispute over cause of death is also a little bit out of control.  The Jackson family is going to need some privacy over the next few days too……..Paramedics worked for about 40 minutes to try and keep him alive.  Not enough……..If you must see the last exclusive photo of M.J., here it is……..The biography from Rolling Stone is actually really good.  Normally we don’t read Rolling Stone very often either…….Madonna’s reaction can be found here.  Justin Timberlake’s can be found here.  It’s just amazing how far this guy’s music spanned and the influence that he had.  We’re a sports blog, but this story just reaches too far not to give it it’s proper due.

Sports Blogs:

Enough sports.  After the jump, the Michael Jackson videos you probably listened to last night.  They’re still good enough to get you through summer hours on a Friday

Anastasia KosenkovaPoints of Interest is the daily link dump for your morning or afternoon commute in and out of Souvenir City.  We’ll be throwing together some other stops from out there in blogdome and the interwebs to peak your interest.  Some of them will actually be what some might consider educational.  Most of them, are going to everything but that.

We’ve got a post coming up to end the day on Whitlock’s response to Jim Brown and Tiger Woods.  We’ve long thought that Jim Brown steps way out of his bounds when telling other athletes how to run their lives.  It’s 2009 Jim, not 1965.  Times change.  Information flow is greater.  Regardless, we had a bit of a slow day but did a lot of reading once we woke up without an alarm.  First time since we started this little place that we’ve done that.  The alarm thing, not the reading.  We’re continuing the theme of English soccer WAGs as we’re watching the footy while writing this.  Anastasia Kosenkova is Aliaksandr Hleb’s wife.  Don’t ask us who he is.

Sad.  Farrah Fawcett died today.  She was 62 years old. Bad things come in threes remember.  McMahon, Thomas, Fawcett……..The Dems are freaking out.  Al Gore bailed on them.  Now, they have no clue how to get this global warming bill passed.  Brainsplosion!……..If they can’t get that bill passed, what does that say about the success rate of the healthcare bill?……..An optomistic point of view.  Write off 2009, get over it.  Look at 2010 and see what you can do better for your investments then……..The FCC can’t be happy about this.  Porn has officially come to the iTunes store. It was only a matter of time……..Don’t send your children to the public library to use the computers.  They might run into a guy like this.

After the jump, a photo from the WAG party that was thrown in Anastasia’s honor.

nba draft 02It’s a pretty weak draft tonight for the NBA.  The only foregone conclusion is that Blake Griffin is going #1 overall to the Los Angeles Clippers.  We don’t think Griffin will be an awful NBA player, but we don’t think he’s bound for superstardom.  Have you ever seen the guy do anything but dunk?  Take it from us.  We watched the Bulls take Tyrus Thomas at number four in 2006 and Griffin had a similar game to Thomas in college.  Griffin is like a Dwight Howard but without the defense.  He can explode to the bucket but has limited to no post game and defensively is mediocre.

That being said, he’s not the only player in the draft tonight.  You’ve got another Euro player that is going in the top 5 to 7 in Ricky Rubio.  When we heard he averaged just 5 points a game across the pond but was a dish-master, we weren’t impressed.  Hasheem Thabeet is the exact opposite of Griffin.  He is extremely limited with the basketball, but, without it, he is a defensive monster.  Perhaps if you combined those two, you’d have an NBA star.

We’ll give you some sleepers, instant impact players and Isiah Thomas jokes after the jump.

Just so everyone is aware, we do Points of Interest on the night prior and have it automatically post in the mornings for you.  So, as of this moment we type this, we’re not aware of any drastic changes to other blogs out there.  That being said, what a day yesterday.  It was like the Civil War of blogging.  Hopefully it’s like a drunk dial to your ex-girlfriend:  You just forget about it the following day and it never comes back to haunt you.  We’re still are looking for writers for the college football post series that we’re planning for the week after the 4th of July. E-Mail us if you’re interested and with what team you’d like to do.  Bring the Kevin Duckworth, Hakeem Nicks and /jmorris jokes hard today.  Elisha Cuthbert demands it or she’ll sick Jack Bauer on all of you.

Why would tortoises need to be smuggled into Kiev? Are they illegal there?……..The more we read about California, the less we want to move there. We’ve got 4 weeks to decide……..Is your boss watching you even after you leave work?  There were two people fired because of their MySpace postings (VIDEO.  We had a friend that was nearly fired for Facebook postings……..We’re a Disney nation!  They own our sports (ESPN) and now they own our news (ABC).…….This concerns us greatly.  We really admire Obama for his public speaking and for the first time yesterday, he was visably disturbed at his press conference……..YES!  Your good news link of the day!  It was a struggle to find, but here are the Top 20 markets to look for a fresh start in. They’re hiring!

After the jump, a video that Shaq Tweeted about last night.  He wants to play the kid in H-O-R-S-E for $1,000.  Watch the whole thing.  Starts slow, finishes strong. And, an even better video of a re-mix of Allen Iverson and Jim Mora set to some rap.
