Pedro MartinezWill someone just sign him already?  He’s not that old.  He showed he can pitch in the WBC.  And, he’s gotta be better than Oliver Perez.  However, it’s a different AL East team that’s looking at him now.  The Phillies.

But, what does this say about them and their rumored desire to acquire Roy Halladay?

Chris AndersenFive years.  $26 million.

For THAT guy?  A guy that averaged 20.6 minutes, 6.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG and 2.5 BPG.  All career highs, mind you.  That is overpaying at it’s finest.  We understand the tattoo themed Thuggets in Denver, but this deal is going to haunt them in about 3 2 1 season.  They should’ve brought Iverson back instead of this jackass.

Roy HalladayJ.P. Ricciardi’s phone is going to be ringing off the hook in the next few weeks.  He’s opened the door to trading who we think is the most reliable and most talented pitcher in baseball.  Roy Halladay is an innings eater that has been living in relative obscurity for 12 seasons north of the border.

This is going to be the most talked about name prior to the trade deadline and if he is in fact traded, he’ll have the greatest impact on pennant races going into the 2nd half.  But, who is willing to put together the package required to land Halladay?  It’s going to require prospects, payroll and some onions by a GM willing to risk their future on winning a title in the next two seasons.

We’ve got a few ideas on who fits that persona.

Hedo Turkoglu Rasheed WallaceWhich one do you think we like, eh?  Hedo went to Portland and said it just didn’t “feel right”.  His wife really likes Toronto.  Well, you know how that goes.  He’s probably going to get more money in Toronto too, but he won’t sniff the Finals.  Portland was one piece away from being entirely relevant next season, too.

As for Rasheed Wallace?  The Big Three came down with Danny Ainge and wooed the bald spot to the Celtics.  This is a great signing for the Celtics.  They have a small window and ‘Sheed fits right into that.  Having Glenn Davis depart does suck, but Wallace will be great to have.  He’s aging and wants a title.  Doc Rivers can control him.  He did well with Starbury, right?

Dale Tallon BlackhawksThe Chicago Blackhawks may have made a huge mistake this past week.  There are several restricted free agents that needed to have qualified offers sent to them by June 29th and they needed to be sent by a certain delivery method.  Well, the Hawks decided that the pony express would be a sufficient option and stars like Kris Versteeg and Cam Barker may not have recieved their offers on time.

If that’s the case, these players could become unrestricted free agents this week.  Really Blackhawks?  After such a good season?

So…maybe he’s not going to Portland after all.  H/T to commenter mrejr8234 for this nugget.

Hedo Turkoglu rejects Blazers (Oregonian)

Another team is relevant in the Western Conference for the ’09-’10 season in the NBA.  After Richard Jefferson went to San Antonio, Denver is coming back strong and the defending champs in L.A., the Portland Trail Blazers have added who we think was Orlando’s best player last season.  Hedo was the guy to have the ball in last second situations for the Magic and he’s also a quality defender.

Marian-HossaWe heard, read and talked about the 12 year deal that the Blackhawks signed Marian Hossa to today.  We’re hockey fans, not experts on free agency in the sport.  But we must ask:

What the fuck?

12 years?  In a sport that only comes in 2nd to violence, contact and collisions to football, why would you sign a player to a 12 year deal?  NHL contracts are guaranteed unlike the NFL.  If Hossa gets hurt in the next 144 months, the Hawks are on the tab for all of the money that the contract stipulates.  We understand calculated risks.  This is a just a plain stupid risk.  Here’s a look at other ridiculous NHL deals.
