Phil MickelsonFirst, his wife is diagnosed with breast cancer.  Then, yesterday, we learn that his mother also has it too?  What does this guy have to do to catch a break?  Just a sad, sad month for Phil Mickelson.  You gotta feel for this guy.  We honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he takes the remainder of the year off.

They say that the game can be a great escape for these guys.  But, could Phil really perform on the course with all of this hanging over his head?  And, if he can’t perform, would playing even be enjoyable for him?

Roger Federer Tiger WoodsTiger won again yesterday along with Federer.  We both think that eventually, Tiger will go down at the GOAT for his sport and Roger is already there.  However, we’d like to have a debate that actually has some ambiguity.  Which of the two will be looked at as the more dominant player?  Who struck more fear into the hearts of the competition when they stepped on the course or court?

Really? This guy in on the decline? We read Fanhouse from time to time because of the quantity of articles, not the quality.  Sure, you can call us Tiger-homers for this but this article by Greg Couch over at Fanhouse is absolutely ridiculous.  Now, we realize he’s just trying to say that Tiger is simply starting to decline.   Nevertheless, we could not disagree any more with that statement.

Tiger is 8 months from knee surgury.  The procedure he had done typically takes 12 months to recover from and it makes the ligament in the knee stronger than it was before.  If Greg Couch thinks that players are no longer afraid when they see Tiger’s name climbing the leaderboard, he’s out of his goddamn mind.  Did he watch the U.S. Open?  Did he see Lucas Glover and Ricky Barnes drop what seemed like 50 strokes once Tiger’s name appeared to climb the board?  Blame it on lack of experience and poor world rankings or whatever.  We’ll take Tiger as cause one.

With a -4 over 5 days of soggy golf, Lucas Glover held on to win the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black this afternoon.  Phil Mickelson with another choke job, David Duval had a great chance but failed and Ricky Barnes shot a +6 on the final day to fall apart.

Tiger finished at even par.  He was never really in contention on the final day.

U.S. Open Update

tiger failTiger is playing similar to what he did on Sunday at the Masters.  The leaders have left the door open for a charge but Tiger just isn’t getting the putts to fall that he needs.  Mickelson is still in the running.  He’s playing solid golf but is spraying the ball off the tee per the usual.

As for the leaders coming in?  Barnes is choking away a lead that looked insurmountable yesterday.  Lucas Glover is choking, but not as bad as Barnes.  Barnes’ confidence has to be shot at this point.  This was a guy that was -11 and as we type this, he’s at -3.  Dropping 8 strokes in a major championship just isn’t going to get it done.

The lesser names on the leaderboard include Ross Fisher, Hunter Mahan and who we liked as a dark horse on Thursday, David Duval.  Duval has dropped 3 shots since starting today, but even par leaves plenty of chance.  We think the winner finishes at -2.

new yorkers suckRemember that scene in Happy Gilmore where Shooter McGavin tells the crowd to, “Go back to your shanties!”  That’s basically what needed to happen on Saturday at Bethpage State Park.  The New Yorkers that were cheering Phil Mickelson on with the predictable “Get in the hole!” off of par 5s were not feeling Tiger Woods and his umbrella during a rainy round.  Here’s some samples of what they came up with:

  • “We’re on Long Island, baby, where men are men!  Put that umbrella down!”
  • “Suck it up, you’ve got your own video game!”
  • “This Bud’s for you!”

The only thing that was even close to clever was yelling Fred Fuck instead of Fred Funk.  Seriously New York?  Is that all you’ve got?  The video link and a Happy Gilmore montage after the jump.

Weir_MikeThe lefties are rocking it out but Phil is starting to fade a little bit.  The crowd is helping him stay with it but Mike Weir is starting to run away and hide.  There’s no way Peter Hanson stays at -4 the rest of the day or is even in the top 10 on Sunday.  Mike Weir has already won a major.  He’ll stay with it.  Weir is taking out hte toughest part of the course by knocking it stiff and tapping in for birdie.
