Michael Jackson Thriller Album Cover 25th Anniversary

Points of Interest is the daily link dump for your morning or afternoon commute in and out of Souvenir City.  We’ll be throwing together some other stops from out there in blogdome and the interwebs to peak your interest.  Some of them will actually be what some might consider educational.  Most of them, are going to everything but that.

The NBA Draft got overshadowed last night with the death of Michael Jackson being announced shortly after 6 p.m. on the east coast.  Still, the draft went on.  Lots of trades made last night.  Stuart continues to prove that he doesn’t belong behind a desk anymore.  And Ricky Rubio had a temper tantrum.  We’ll give our grades on the draft later today.  We leave you with Michael Jackson links, pictures and videos for the remainder of POI today.  Sports in the blog links.

TMZ has link after link after link after link of the coverage.  It’s almost a little bit too much……..The dispute over cause of death is also a little bit out of control.  The Jackson family is going to need some privacy over the next few days too……..Paramedics worked for about 40 minutes to try and keep him alive.  Not enough……..If you must see the last exclusive photo of M.J., here it is……..The biography from Rolling Stone is actually really good.  Normally we don’t read Rolling Stone very often either…….Madonna’s reaction can be found here.  Justin Timberlake’s can be found here.  It’s just amazing how far this guy’s music spanned and the influence that he had.  We’re a sports blog, but this story just reaches too far not to give it it’s proper due.

Sports Blogs:

Enough sports.  After the jump, the Michael Jackson videos you probably listened to last night.  They’re still good enough to get you through summer hours on a Friday

Hope your weekend was outstanding and you got to spend some time with the old man or that your kids bought you something other than socks.  We had an outstanding Crawfish boil and our head still hurts from the ensuing bar trip.  We also rediscovered how fun it is to bet on the ponies at the racetrack.  The U.S. Open finishes today and Tiger is no where to be found.  NBC can’t be happy about that.  Still, Phil has a small chance to pull off a miracle as he’s 6 back of the leader.  There’s a chance a movie review is coming today but we’ll for sure comment on the Kobe Bryant piece we read in SI in between packing up all our stuff for the move.  This piece over here is Joanna Krupa.  Your funny video of the day after the jump.

Obama’s approval rating is starting to tank. We think it has nothing to do with Iran but rather all of the money he’s been spending lately.  Amazing what changes in six months time……..Speaking of Iran, there’s now a Newsweek journalist that’s been detained……..The good news in the reporter detainee department is that this guy escaped the Taliban after being held captive for about 7 months……..We swear we’re not in the business of bashing the President but we can’t find anything that says positive things about him.  The newest gripe is his failure to follow through with the transparency he promised……..We don’t need to borrow any money yet but it looks like it will be at a higher interest rate when we do……..Our weird link for today:  Google Street view catches a mugging.

We know you missed it, so we’re loading up points of interest this afternoon.  The Live Blog was a disaster because God hates Chris Berman, wait, golf, no wait, ESPN New Yorkers.  So, we’re going to continue our live blog aspirations by doing a full day of golf tomorrow after we meet with the government (gulp).  There’s a lot of day baseball going on today, so we’ll be sure and get you Touch ‘Em All tomorrow too.  And, the Duffster.  Before she went all un-hot on us.  A funny one after the jump.

What is going on with all of these crazy plane landings?  We hate to fly and this certainly isn’t helping…….The U.S. set a record today! But, it’s not quite the record that you really want to set…..A case for Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty to be the next face of the GOP.  We totally agree with this and we’re not Republicans……..Our secretary of state appears to be a little bit clumsy. Don’t worry, it happens to everyone……We’re finally able to fit everything you need to know about Iran into one solitary link.  Consume!

sosa testimonyWe’re kinda tired of the Sammy Sosa story too but there is a new angle that could hurt the star long term.  Most people had already come to grips with the fact that Sosa used PEDs years ago.  However, in his 2005 testimony, he told Congress that he never used PEDs of any kind…  His statement was made through an interpreter and by his lawyer.

That testimony is going to be review to see if Sosa had committed perjury.  If so, Sammy is quickly heading down the same path that Roger Clemens did.

Now, we still haven’t heard anything from Sosa himself on the matter.  And to be honest, we really don’t want to.  Sammy is likely to do exactly what A-Rod did; throw himself on the mercy of the court.  Save us the act Sammy.  We know you’re not sorry for what you did.  We don’t blame you for it either.

steroids-in-baseballSammy Sosa came as no big surprise.  Not only because we grew up as Cubs fans and the summer of ’98 is a classic memory.  But, everyone had already convicted Sosa before he actually came up in the news yesterday.  But, A-Rod?  Manny?  Even 5 years ago with Palmiero?  Those were surprises.

But at this point, who would surprise you?

After the jump, we’ll start compiling a list of who we think are future Hall of Famers and would actually surprise us.  In the comments, let us know who you would be surprised by.

manny-ramirez-dodgersDoes Manny Ramirez not have a PR guy/girl?  Or does he simply neglect to think before speaking as most athletes do.  We were laying around last night listening to Jason Smith again when we heard this little nugget from the dreadlocked one:

I didn’t kill nobody, I didn’t rape nobody, so that’s it, I’m just going to come and play the game.

Oh, Manuel.  Someone should’ve told you that comparing your steroid use to rape and murder was not going to go over so well.  And the whole “I’m the victim here!” shenanigans aren’t going to pay dividends for you either.

Personally, we don’t care that Manny Ramirez took/was linked to steroids.  In our opinion, if you weren’t using them over the past decade, you’re an idiot.  Any dope with an ounce of talent and a syringe could have been a millionaire ten times over via MLB in the last two decades.

Now, before we go to the jump and all of the soccer moms out there send us hate mail, we don’t condone cheating or drug usage in kids.  We played baseball.  We definitely cheated as a pitcher.  But our ass wasn’t a pincushion during puberty.
