superman emblemIt’s Friday.  There’s people on summer hours.  So, this is probably the last post we do before POI, The Skyline and then your UFC 100 preview.  But, it’s a long one.  So sit back and strap it down.  Your MLB Power Rankings heading into the All-Star Break.

1.) Los Angeles Dodgers (54-31): They’ve got Manny back.  They didn’t struggle without him.  The Giants are playing out of their minds and the Dodgers are still 7 games clear of them.  These guys are making the playoffs obviously, but mark it down.  They are not going to the World Series.  Peak too soon in baseball and you don’t finish strong.

2.) New York Yankees (51-34): Bring it on Red Sox fans.  You’re 5-5 in your last 10, and the Yankees are 8-2.  We told you not to sell on these guys at the start of the season and we’re being validated.  In that stadium, this offense is going to excel like no other offense in the league.  The bullpen issues are starting to clear up with Phil Hughes and Coke.  “And the New York Yankees are going to the World Series!” (circa 2003.  Suck it Red Sox)

joel pineiroCardinals 5 – Brewers 1: Joel Piniero now has 4 CGs this year.  This was his 7th win and he’s only 7-9 on the season.  But the guy has been lights out for about a month now and it’s starting to worry us as Cubs fans.  The Cardinals are coming into Wrigley this weekend (we’re going to the double-header on Sunday!) and the Cubs need to win 2 out of 3.  Thankfully, we don’t have to face Piniero.  Now, there’s a sentence we thought we’d never write.

ChicagoAtNight1We’re unveiling a new final post for every day that we’ll put up for folks to comment on (yeah, right) and with what’s on the tube for the evening.  We’ll give you a run down of sports, entertainment, local titty bar specials and other things to watch for while you evade the kids or shrug off your work from the day.

Tonight, there’s actually a few things that might be worth watching on the sports calendar.  Nomar Garciaparra makes his first return to Fenway Park for the first time since being traded to the Cubs in 2004 (ugh).  UFC continues its countdown of the top fights with numbers 75-51 on Spike.  And, Tommy Boy (we’ll pretty much watch it every time) is on Comedy Central.  The full slate of MLB games and probable starters after the jump (courtesy MLB.com).

chokeOrioles 11 – Red Sox 10: What a choke job by the Nation.  The Red Sox had a 9 run lead and as you can tell, it wasn’t enough.  John Smoltz did put up 4 solid innings but we’re curious why he was only allowed 52 pitches.  The Orioles came up with 5 in the 7th and 5 in the 8th.  Hideki Okajima and Justin Masterson were the culprits allowing 9 ERs in 2.1 IP.  There was some bad news for Orioles fans though.  Adam Jones was injured in center field whie trying to make a catch.  He’s initially listed as day-to-day but keep your eyes open.

White Sox 11 – Indians 4: We all know the Indians are awful this year.  But Cliff Lee did win a Cy Young last year.  He lost a streak of 47 straight starts going into at least the 6th inning last night.  Lee was rocked for 7 ERs through 3+ IP.  We’ve advocated the White Sox trading Jermaine Dye or Jim Thome all year to get younger.  They’re contenders…should they still trade the elder statesmen?

Rockies 3 – Dodgers 0: Can the Cubs un-trade Jason Marquis?  His 3rd complete game this year.  His 10th win.  He shut out the best team in baseball.  The Dodgers really do need Manny back though.  Their runs per game are down over a full run this month from May.  Brad Hawpe had a solo homer while Marquis drove in the other two runs.  Guy does it all.  Jim Hendry, your explanation would be much appreciated.

tommy hansonBraves 2 – Red Sox 1: Tommy Hanson is 4-0.  Up until commenter younglefty mentioned him in a previous Touch ‘Em All, we had never heard from him.  But, when Peter Gammons gives you a thumbs up, we listen.  Baseball is one sport where we actually like the ESPN crew.  Even while under the flu, Hanson pitched 6 scoreless innings and Mike Gonzalez almost blew the game for him in the ninth.  The Braves held on as Jacoby Ellsbury needed a trampoline to hit the final pitch of the game.  Chipper Jones and Garrett Anderson homered to provide the Braves offense.

Phillies 5 – Blue Jays 4: Aaron Hill hit two home runs and it still wasn’t enough for the Blue Jays.  There was no scoring after the fifth inning of this game as Jamie Moyer some how pitched 5 innings and gave up 4 ERs… yet still won.  Chase Utley provided the offense with a run scoring double and triple for the Phils.  Someone has to break out in the NL East soon.  We had the Mets until Carlos Beltran, Delgado, and Jose Reyes all went down.  The Phillies need to take advantage.  Fast.

Royals 3 – Pirates 2: Normally, we would never give you a recap of these two teams.  But Zack Greinke now has 10 wins, so we felt obligated to.  His ERA is back below 2.00 but his K/9 in his last 4 outings is alarming.  4.84.  That’s terrible.  Greinke is a strikeout pitcher, not a contact guy.  How does Joakim Soria only have 9 saves?  And how does Mariano Rivera think Soria is better than him?

World Series Rays Phillies BaseballPhillies 10 – Blue Jays 0: Jayson Werth, a former Blue Jay, became the 14th player in the history of the SKYDOME (damnit, we’ll call it what we want), to hit a bomb into the top deck.  Probably a similar achievement as to hitting on the roof at old Tiger Stadium or into the water at AT&T Park.  It was a shot.  J.A. Happ also had a big pitching performance and kept that zero clean through all nine innings.  No one seems to want to run away with the NL East.  We’ve still got the Mets just because of the pitching.

Yankees 5 – Mets 0: Thanks Mets.  Way to make us look stupid for picking you.  A.J. Burnett was down right illegal last night.  He had a no-no through five and only allowed one hit through seven with 10 Ks.  Jorge Posada’s sixth inning 3-run homer was the big blow as it made the lead insurmountable for an offense without Carlos’ Beltran and Delgado.  Mets need some offense.  Bad.

Red Sox 1 – Braves 0: Tim Wakefield pitched his second career 1-0 game.  It was his first since 1995.  The knuckler was dancin’ all night long and believe it or not… Tim Wakefield is 10-3.  He’s got more wins than a charging Josh Beckett.  The Red Sox are dangerous right now.  Papi’s stick is back as he’s quickly up to 8 HRs on the season.  The only notable portion of the box score?  Brian McCann stole a base.  Man has a small hip-hop…hip-hop….hip-hop anonymous?  Not sure how to spell that.  He’s slow.  That’s what we’re trying to say.

joel pineiroCardinals 3 – Mets 0: Joel Pineiro has two complete games this season, both of them shutouts.  This guy has a career 4.50 ERA and had 3 shutouts total coming into this season.  Is Dave Duncan what Leo Mazzone was supposed to be?  Just without three of the greatest pitchers of all-time?  The Mets are going to struggle mightily over the next few weeks with many of their players on the shelf.  David Wright is going to need to play out of his mind.  MetsBlog has the fans’ confidence rating at 43%.  But, Mets fans were probably jumping off a cliff long ago.  They’d rather the team collapse now than at the end of the season.  The Mets had two as many hits as Albert Pujols had RBIs.  Two.

Tigers 5 – Cubs 4: Get Kevin Gregg out of the closer’s role NOW.  We can’t say much more than that other than Micah Hoffpauir has hit two HRs in the last week that have put the Cubs ahead after the seventh inning.  The Cubs haven’t won either game.  Moving right along…

Blue Jays 7 – Reds 5: Joey Votto was activated in his home town prior to this game but it wasn’t enough for the Rainbow Coalition to beat the Blue Jays. Brian Tallet went 6 scoreless innings and even though every bullpen pitcher but Jason Frasor allowed at least one run, the Jays held on.  Bigger fantasy contributor/surprise this year:  Marco Scutaro or Aaron Hill?
